Frequently Asked Questions:

Are you a part of Section 8 housing?

No, NAFC Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) and operates separately from other non-profits and government-subsidized housing programs. We often look to partner with individuals and families who are looking to be independent of transitional housing, because financial independence is important to being successful in our homeownership program.

Do you give away houses?

No; Habitat for Humanity is a hand-up, not a hand-out. This isn't Extreme Home Makeover, and our program is tough; but for families who are low-income yet financially stable, this program is a way to own a home and pay a mortgage at a very low cost. Families pay zero-interest monthly mortgage payments over their chosen mortgage term to make the home affordable!

Can I choose where I live?

Most of our properties are donated by individuals and organizations, and we only buy what a small non-profit can afford. Also, most of our properties are in New Albany, though we look to expand our selection with our expansion into Clark County. We try to give our homebuyers a choice in which property they choose based on who reaches their sweat equity goal first (75 hours for single adult households, 100 hours for 2+ adults.)

Can I bring friends with me to volunteer?

Of course--we are ALWAYS looking forward to new volunteers, but make sure you sign up online! If you show up on-site without signing up, we cannot guarantee you any work. We like to work efficiently, so please make sure you sign you or your group up online via the Volunteer button on our homepage!
